Nicotine Gums

Nicotine replacement therapies, such as nicotine gums, are clinically proven to help smokers quit. Some people found the taste of the gum unpleasant. Nicotine gums are available in two strengths and a range of flavors.

Nicotine gum is made/marketed by two large pharmaceutical companies: Johnson & Johnson (J&J) and Novartis. Popular brands of nicotine gum  include Nicorette, Nicotinell, Habitrol, and Nicotrol. In the USA, GlaxoSmithKline have the rights to market the Nicorette brand of gum. Nicotine gum is sold as Over-the-Counter (OTC) or General Sale in most countries.

Nicotine gum is available in two strengths: 4mg (also known as Extra Strength) and 2mg (Regular Strength). A range of flavors are available and some gums are candy-coated. Not all flavors are available in all markets/countries.

How to use nicotine Gum

Nicotine gum is not like regular chewing gum. It contains a controlled dose of nicotine. It is important to use the correct chewing technique. The gum is first chewed until it becomes soft and begins to release flavor or a 'peppery' taste. It is then placed or 'parked' between the cheek and gums. Once the flavor has subsided, the process can be repeated, up to about 30 minutes.
