Quit Smoking Tips and Advice

We know it can be difficult to quit smoking so we have put together some tips and advice from other people who have successfully stopped smoking. We hope they help you.

STAY POSITIVE

If you feel tempted, think about something else, perhaps what you intend to do with all the money you will save. Make a list of all the reasons why you want to stop smoking and keep it somewhere prominent. Read it when your resolve weakens. All people who quit have negative thoughts. This is normal. Keep going. Think of yourself as an "non-smoker", not and "ex-smoker". Enjoy your improved sense of smell and taste.

  • Believe that you can quite. Remind yourself of other difficult things that you have done in your life and realize that you do have the determination and strength to see it through.
  • Write down some of the reasons for quitting that are important to you. Place the list somewhere prominent and read it daily.
  • Ask family and friends to be supportive. They will then understand why you might be irritable sometimes.
  • Begin to exercise. Exercise helps relieve stress. Start slowly if necessary.
  • Set a Quit Date. Stick to it. Prepare your mind before hand and begin thinking of yourself as a non-smoker.
  • Quitting 'cold turkey' can be hard and painful.  You are twice as likely to succeed with a support program.  Find one that works for you.
  • Take the opportunity to care for other aspects of your health - take some exercise, improve your diet by eating more fiber and more fruit. Feel healthy.
  • Stop smoking with a friend and quit together. Use the bulletin board and forum on this website to both offer and receive support from fellow quitters.
  • Clean everything that has a lingering smell of cigarettes - clothes, bed linen, carpets, upholstery, car interior. You will enjoy the fresh aroma with your new-found sense of smell.
  • Set some milestones to celebrate your quitting. Perhaps go to a nice restaurant at one month, then a weekend away at three months. Have a party to celebrate one year of being a non-smoker.
  • Have healthy snacks handy and drink plenty of water.
  • Recognize your triggers and avoid them or plan an alternative (take a snack to the bar/pub).
  • Keep a journal or use a web forum like the one on this website to share your experiences.
  • Don't completely give in if you relapse and have a cigarette in a weak moment. You are not a failure. Keep going.
